The two 20-week-old turkeys will enjoy a much more tranquil Thanksgiving than many of their fellow fowl, as they’re headed to “Turkey Hill” the historic turkey farm at Morven Park, the Leesburg, Va., home of former Virginia Gov. Westmoreland Davis, according to the White House. There, they’ll be on display for visitors seeking a second-degree brush with the president. Though the event is meant as an opportunity for the president to express a bit of Thanksgiving cheer, it’s not without controversy. Earlier this month, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals called on Obama’s daughters to encourage their father to end the “offensive turkey pardon” and go vegan for the holiday. But the tradition, which the National Turkey Federation says has been around since President Harry Truman, went on.
Obama rebuffs immigration hecklers – CNN.com
Obama told the protesters it “doesn’t make sense to yell at me right now,” given his immigration action last week. “What you’re not paying attention to is, I just took an action to change the law,” he said as the crowd applauded. The interruptions continued, with Obama saying at one point that he’s “not going to be able to have a conversation with each of you separately” and later that they should “just sit down.” “Nobody’s removing you. I’ve heard you. But you’ve got to listen to me, too,” he said.

“Burning buildings, torching cars, destroying property, putting people at risk … there’s no excuse for it,” Obama said in Chicago, calling for anyone found guilty of involvement to be prosecuted. “Those are criminal acts,” Obama added, while expressing sympathy for minorities who felt laws were not being enforced “uniformly or fairly.” Obama urged parties aggrieved by events in Ferguson to work peacefully to achieve change, saying the case had exposed “an American problem.” “The bottom line is nothing of significance, nothing of benefit results from destructive acts,” he said. “I’ve never seen a civil rights law or a health care bill or an immigration bill result because a car got burned. “It happened because people vote. It happened because people mobilize, people organize — it happens because people look at what are the best policies to solve the problem.” Politics & Government

In 2011, amid pressure from Republicans and industry, and facing a battle for re-election, Obama reneged on a plan by then-EPA administrator Lisa Jackson to lower the permissible level to be more protective of public health. “Seldom do presidents get an opportunity to right a wrong,” said Bill Becker of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies, one of numerous advocacy groups that were enraged by the White House’s decision to table the first proposal. Although the EPA is proposing a range of 65 to 70 parts per billion, the agency’s scientific advisers have endorsed a standard as low as 60 parts per billion. The EPA said it would take public comments on that lower level, too, leaving the door open to the possibility of even more stringent standards. The agency will also seek comments on the current standard of 75 parts per billion. The initial range of 60 to 70 parts per billion proposed by the EPA in January 2010 would have doubled the number of counties in violation.

Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., who represents the Silicon Valley, said Obama was constrained by the legal advice he received. aThere’s what you want, and what’s possible to do, and people do understand that what you might want him to do is constrained by the law,a Lofgren said. Lofgren had been among those saying Obama could take executive action to allow businesses read here to arecapturea permanent resident green cards that had been authorized by Congress but never issued. Obama can’t issue green cards on his own, but business officials say that more than 200,000 that have already been authorized by Congress never have been distributed, and the administration could redistribute them. The administration did not take that step.
